The Start-Up Entrepreneur: How You Can Succeed in Building Your Own Company
Published in Paperback by Plume (March, 1997)
Author: James R. Cook
Average review score:

Motivation for Inventors
I found this book very inspiring and motivating, especially the second chapter on finding a business to start. It is better to start with a mediocre product than never to get going. .. the continued search for the perfect venture can turn into mere procrastination... Make the decision that you are an entrepreneur. If your plan doesn't work...you are that much closer to ultimate success. This is worth having in your library so you can re-read periodically

The Startup Entrepreneur
"The Startup Entrepreneur - How you can succeed in building your own company". It provides you with all the insight into running of a business from startup stage right through to corporation size from the entrepreneur's point of view.

Reading advice; can sometimes be a tedious task, but this book is backed up by James Cook's real life examples of the trials that he went through as an entrepreneur. Right from starting small, in a service-based business then growing to a large corporation this book missed nothing. Its inspirational, advice driven, with plenty of information on what to do in given situations.

Another interesting topic this book covered was the background information given about many of the "famous" entrepreneurs that came out of the American economy. It is a study in the entrepreneur and their habits and common traits. Commonalties were usually that they didn't care a hell of a lot of what people thought of them, they weren't overly greedy, had the need for control, and also had the need for anonymity.

Chapters in the book include starting, developing, success in starting, winning ways to keep you going, and how to diversify your growing enterprise. It finishes with exit strategies, i.e. stepping down, and/or selling your company. It then has a section on one of the crucial topics for all decision makers in a company - tips on marketing and sales. There was even an interesting section on running a sales team.

This is a well-written book with much of the theory based on James Cook's interesting and extremely varied life in business, both in success and on the brink of failure. Motivational for the young and old entrepreneur, I give it an nine out of ten.

Taste of Africa: 70 Easy-To-Cook Recipes from an Undiscovered Cuisine (Creative Cooking Library)
Published in Hardcover by Smithmark Publishing (September, 1995)
Author: Rosamund Grant

Easy-to-follow gourmet recipes; every one a winner
I have never before experienced such an easy to follow and such an interesting cookbook. I found it on a trip to Canada in June, 1998. Each recipe has been delicious and successful every time; my husband and I have loved every one and have bought the book for several family members and friends. Everyone has been delighted; HATS OFF to a wonderful, versatile Chef Rosamund Grant.

The recipes in this book are outstanding !!!!
I have tried several of the recipes contained within this book and have been completely and totally taken in by a cuisine that I had no experience with prior to reading Ms. Grants book. If this is an introduction to traditional African cooking I feel that a great many people are missing out on one of the most flavorful and enjoyable cuisines of the world.

Too Many Cooks

Love this series!
This is the second book in the Angie Amalfi series and I loved it as much as I did the first. Granted, Angie is a spoiled rich girl, but she is so loving and caring and loves Paavo so much that I really enjoy her. The combination of mystery and romance is wonderful. The mystery kept me guessing right up to the end. When I finish one of these books, I have a fulfilled feeling because all of the loose ends are tied up neatly, but there is a desire to continue reading. So, I purchased all of the rest of the books in the series so I can catch up with everything happening in Angie's life.

A fantastic, satisfying series.
Joanne Pence has created some wonderful characters in her Angie and Paavo series. I hope she keeps them coming because each one gets better than the previous one. The first one was a #10 and each book after that has not disappointed. I would highly recommend this series.

Toxina

Author: Robin Cook
Average review score:

Trace Their Shadows
Published in Paperback by Mystery & Suspense Pr (November, 2001)
Author: Ann Turner Cook
Average review score:

An entertaining mystery and ghost story
Ann Turner Cook was one of the celebrated Gerber babies at the beginning of her life. She is presently a retired English teacher, living in Central Florida, where she researches for her mystery writing with her husband. She acted as an emissary for the Gerber Company and has made several guest appearances on national talk and news shows, including The Today Show; Good Morning, America; Entertainment Tonight; Sally Jesse Raphael; and the Rosie O'Donnell Show. She is just as cute now as she was as a Gerber baby.

Brandy O'Bannon is trying to save her job with the Tavares Beacon by writing an interesting feature article for her editor, Mr. Tyler. It concerns an old mansion that is decaying and about to be sold to a developer. Brookfield Able bequeathed the old mansion to his sister Sylvania, with the understanding that she could sell it if she so desired. There are rumors that the mansion is haunted, and the tale of a bizarre drowning forty-five years ago adds to the mystery. Brandy enlists the aid of Sylvania's grand-nephew, architect John Able, to gain access to Sylvania and the mansion's sad and eerie history. John and Brandy connect after sharing life-threatening experiences as they "look around" the mansion for artifacts and find human remains:

"At the same instant, the moccasin's fangs sank into John's hand. She gave a sob, sprang out of the boat, and rushed toward John as the moccasin drew back and slid over the edge of the pier into the water. John had dropped to his knees, supporting his wounded arm with the other hand."

Ann Turner Cook's twenty-six years of teaching high school literature shines through in her writing. The plot is first-rate; characters are people who are easy to relate to and care about; the action is nonstop; and the denouement is excellent. Ms. Cook intertwines a sad but wonderful ghost story into her plot, which keeps the reader guessing from page one until the delightful finale. I got totally caught up in her tale and couldn't put the book down! I personally wish I could have experienced Ann T. Cook's teaching, because I'll bet she was a superb teacher. Trace Their Shadows is an entertaining mystery and ghost story that can't help but please.

Mount Dora - Crime Center of the South.....
Mount Dora is a sleepy lakeside community outside bustling Orlando, far away from the big mouse and screaming rides, and is known more for antiques than crime. My most personal memory of Mount Dora is a wonderful, sleepy day of drinking far too many Dos Equis at the Mexican restaurant while celebrating Cinco de Mayo, years ago.

In contrast, author Cook takes you along with Brandy O'Bannon, an enthusiastic if inexperienced journalist, to the Mount Dora where cottonmouths strike out of the dark and old murderers flit across the mists. A classic mystery novel, Trace Their Shadows has more than a fair share of crime, clues and villains.

Cook brings an old south knowledge of the people and place alive, reviving memories of the Florida, good and bad, that is rapidly disappearing, replaced by developments and theme parks. O'Bannon reminds me of what I imagine Nancy Drew would be if she were plopped into the twenty-first century, a little more worldly-wise, but still inquisitive and forever into things she shouldn't.

Trace their Shadows is well crafted, an entertaining trip across the new Florida to the old.

Treasured Recipes: 200 Prizewinning Dishes from America's Hometown Cooks (Better Homes and Gardens(R))
Published in Hardcover by Meredith Books (October, 2000)
Author: Better Homes and Gardens
Average review score:

Definitely one for my ready reference shelf
The magazine's editors began the Better Homes & Gardens Prize Tested Recipes Contest in 1923 and it has been a popular source of inspiration for home cooks ever since. This volume offers more than two hundred of the best from the past seventy-five years -- though, presumably because of changes in tastes, most actually date from the 1970s and later. Along with a large number of excellent recipes, many of them enticingly photographed, there are fascinating bits of culinary trivia: the circumstances behind the introduction of sangria, zucchini, and Belgian waffles to the U.S., the ups and downs of coffee-drinking, the invention of instant biscuit mix, the fudge brownie, and white chocolate, and many other subjects of interest. As always with the magazine, the recipes are clear and easily reproducible.

My new favorite cookbook!
This book is full of great dishes in all categories. The recipes are all winners in various contests by BHG, and recipes even date back to the 1930's. Full of classic recipes, not just the latest trends. Beautiful photographs and easy-to-read layout. This is a classic cookbook, would make a great gift (but only after you've bought one for yourself first!).

The Triathletes: A Season in the Lives of Four Women in the Toughest Sport of All
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (October, 1992)
Author: Jeff S. Cook

If you are in any way into endurance sports....
I love this book. I was amazed to learn it is out of print. Jeff Cook does an amazing job of taking you inside the life and minds of the greatest athletes in the world. If you are looking for inspiration or motivation of the athletic sort, read this book. I was awestruck at Jeff's ability to extract the emotion and intensity of these athletes. This book was part of an Olympic display at my local library, at the time I was training for my first marathon and thought it would be a great way to boost my motivation, boy did it ever. I found myself having to find seats on the train to work that were out of the way due to my constant tearing, it is that good. I have never competed in a triathlon but since the reading of this book have purchased 3 Ironman videos (I'm addicted) and one day plan to do one. If you are in any way into endurance sports and love to read stories about those who push the body to the physical limit, this one's for you!

A inspirational biography
I loved the book and felt Jeff Cook did a wonderful job in details, emotions, and the true meaning of women triathletes. As a triathlete myself I have read this book many times and always feel like I could read it again. Very inspirational.
